Jobs created at Barrow call centre

31/07/2008

Telecoms giant BT has purchased a UK-based call centre in Barrow-in-Furness, creating jobs for contact centre operators in the north-west town.

Under the £20 million deal, BT will take over the Ufindus call centre and add around 20 new staff members over the next 12 months.

The move will help BT boost its call centre workforce in Barrow and expand its directories business in the area. Around 70 people are already employed at its directory inquiries centre next to the town's train station.

BT spokesperson Emma Tennant said: "The new acquisition is an online business, but will be part of our directories portfolio doing different things to the Abbey Road site, but complementing as all will sit within the same BT department."

The deal also includes the Ufindus headquarters in Lancaster and offices in Blackpool, Chorley and Huddersfield.

Ms Tennant said BT plans to take on extra staff at each of these sites and confirmed that the majority of the jobs created would be sales-related.

BT saw its revenue increase by three per cent in the first quarter of this year and enjoyed a seven per cent rise in pre-tax earnings.
