Call centres given data security warning

12/09/2008

Call centres are being reminded of the data security risks associated with failure to properly remove and dispose of office equipment.

According to the IT disposals company Tier 1 Asset Management, contact centres must adopt tried and tested removal processes if they want to avoid losing sensitive customer data.

"It is no coincidence that of the recent data loss episodes, none have come when a specialist asset disposal organisation has been involved," said the company's marketing manager Jon Selby.

He pointed out that it is possible for call centres to sell unwanted laptops and other equipment on the internet through auction sites such as eBay rather than disposing of them completely.

However, he insisted it is crucial that the right data erasure tools are applied to prevent sensitive information from entering into the public domain.

His comments come after Becky Hogge, an executive director at the Open Rights Group, said employees working in contact centres have a duty to handle personal data in a responsible way.
