Call centre expansion 'given green light'

Approval has been given to extend a call centre in the north-east from councillors there, despite opposition.
While a planning committee said that certain levels of noise at Market Dock and the Garlands venue are not great, no objections were raised to stop plans from going ahead, reports the Shields Gazette.
One of the officials to agree to the proposals, Horsley Hill's councillor Eileen Leask, noted that it may be easier to respond positively than turn the scheme down.
"That's a process that would cost council tax payers a lot of money. That's why I, very reluctantly, say we must grant permission," she commented.
Staff at the call centre firm have said that special equipment will be put in place in the UK call centre so that the noise of conditioning devices is diminished.
Last week it was revealed that bank HSBC is to invest in a new call centre that will be based in Newport, Wales.
